Dental implants are an innovative solution for replacing missing teeth, but are they worth the investment? For some people, it is the best solution for improving their oral health, for others dental implants help improve their confidence. In this blog post we will explore why this procedure is beneficial, no matter the reasoning for wanting dental implants.

What are dental implants?

Dental implants are a solution for replacing missing teeth. The procedure provides a strong foundation for fixed or removable teeth that match the remaining teeth in your mouth. The common types are dental implants include:

  • Endosteal: Endosteal implants, the more common type preferred by dentists, are anchored into the jawbone like a small screw to act as a tooth root. This method helps prevent bone loss and shifting of adjacent teeth, preserving the facial and jaw structure.
  • Subperiosteal: Subperiosteal implants, placed under the gum or on the jawbone, are used for patients with insufficient jawbone strength for endosteal implants. While bone augmentation can strengthen the jaw for endosteal implants, subperiosteal implants offer similar results without the need for this additional procedure.
  • Single Stage: A single-stage dental implant requires one surgery where a longer implant is placed into the jaw and gum with the top exposed, allowing for immediate attachment of the connector and crown once healed. This quicker process is ideal for patients with bone issues or special needs, facilitating easier adjustment to their new teeth.
  • Two-Stage: The two-stage dental implant procedure requires two surgeries with healing time in between, allowing the implant base to fuse to the jawbone for a strong foundation. Although more invasive and complex, it offers long-term benefits similar to a real tooth root.

What are the benefits of dental implants?

There are multiple benefits of dental implants that range from improving your oral health to increasing your confidence with your smile. Some of the main reasons dental implants are worth the investment are:

Durability

Dental implants are highly durable and are designed to last many years, often a lifetime, with proper care and maintenance. They are made from titanium or zirconia which are both strong and resistant to wear and corrosion. The process of osseointegration, by which the implant fuses with the jawbone, provides a stable and strong foundation similar to a natural tooth root.

Resistance to Decay

Similarly to durability, dental implants are not susceptible to cavities or decay like natural teeth. It is important that you practice good oral hygiene to prevent gum disease though. Gum disease can decrease the longevity of dental implants.

Preservation of Adjacent Teeth

Preservation of adjacent teeth is a significant advantage of dental implants over traditional bridges. When replacing a missing tooth with a bridge, adjacent teeth must be prepared by removing enamel to accommodate the crowns that support the bridge. This alteration is irreversible and can weaken otherwise healthy teeth. In contrast, dental implants are standalone replacements that do not rely on neighboring teeth for support. Each implant is anchored directly into the jawbone, mimicking the natural tooth root. This independence means adjacent teeth remain untouched, preserving their original structure and strength.

Better Eating and Speaking

Dental implants act as normal teeth allowing you to eat and speak naturally. With dentures, teeth may need to be removed or certain foods may need to be avoided. Dental implants allow you to eat freely, as long as you maintain proper oral care for your gum health. Dental implants do not affect your speech because they fit in naturally with your teeth and do not cause a lisp or any other speech impediments.

Natural Look

One of the biggest draws of dental implants is that they look natural. Dental implants match the coloring of your existing teeth so they fit in seamlessly. The natural look of dental implants can help to improve an individual’s confidence as well.

What is the cost of dental implants?

The investment of dental implants varies greatly depending on the type of implant you choose and how many teeth are being replaced. Insurance also plays a role in the cost of dental implants.

Without any coverage from insurance, a single dental implant can cost around $3,000. All-on-4 dental implants or a full mouth of dental implants can cost about $20,000.

Dental practices often have financing options that may be beneficial when considering dental implants as well.

Does insurance cover dental implants?

Depending on your insurance plan or the need for dental implants, they may be partly or fully covered by your insurance. It is best to contact your insurance provider before scheduling the procedure.
